The African Company Presents Richard III
17th Feb 2009 - 28th March at various venues across the UK starting with Greenwich 17th-21st february.
1821. 40 years before the end of slavery. In this true story, the African Company, America's first black theatre company, is preparing to produce Richard 111 in downtown New York. Meanwhile their competition, Stephen Price, an uptown, Broadway-type impresario, is producing the same play, and he has promised a famous English actor overflowing audiences if he plays Richard. Determined to close down the rival production, Price resorts to manipulating the law, doing everything he can to stop the African Company's production from opening.
Collective Artistes is an International Black Ensemble with the creative team and core performing company having worked together since 1997.
